More than 700 visitors enjoyed homemade cakes, bee talks and plants galore
More than 700 visitors enjoyed a sunny and flower-filled afternoon at Northfields Allotments Summer Open Day.
“It was fantastic,” said one local John Regan.
“A wonderful afternoon and lovely to see all the plots tended so nicely.”
Attendees had the choice of dozens of sweet treats at the cake stall from strawberry muffins to a courgette chocolate cake. Savoury food on offer included hotdogs and the halloumi and vegetable kebabs proved particularly popular.
It was washed down with tea or beer and elderflower cocktails from the bar.
A local male a Capella choir, Capital Chorus, were on hand to serenade the crowds.
The children’s activity corner was busy with kids getting their fingers stuck in the soil. Up at the plant stall flowers like cosmos and rudbeckia flew off the pallets along with courgettes and tomatoes.
Meanwhile the bee hives were abuzz with interested visitors, who left with beeswax lip balms and candles.
They also enjoyed the history panels dotted across the site, which illustrated topics from our WW2 Anderson shelter to the retro crisp packets unearthed over the years.
Locals Meha and Mark were impressed by the site: “It was a lovely day out, really relaxing,” Meha said.
“We enjoyed seeing the range of produce and flowers and creativity on the plots.”
There were two walking tours of the site, and visitors also enjoyed meandering on their own picking up gardening ideas along the way.
