London’s oldest allotment is inviting visitors to its sixth annual Summer open day on Sunday 4th July, when plotholders at Northfields Allotments on Northfield Avenue, West Ealing, will open the gates between 1pm and 5pm.
Entry is FREE, although donations will, of course, be very welcome.
Visitors will be able to see the wide variety of plots on the site and check out what is growing, as well as joining guided tours to discover more about the site’s wildlife and history.
Other attractions include: an onsite apiary where bees produce Northfields Allotments' honey; a heritage plot with a World War II Anderson shelter; and a wildlife-friendly shed made from recycled materials with a green roof.
There will also be: a refreshment stall selling tea, coffee and cakes; plant and produce stalls; kids activities; a BBQ; and a bar where visitors can enjoy a drink.
Visitors should come to the main allotment gates at the north end of Northfield Avenue in West Ealing (opposite Dean Court). Dogs are allowed if kept on a lead.
For anyone with an interest in gardening, London’s history or simply curious about what takes places on a modern urban allotment, this should be an enjoyable event.
Penny Wark, chair of the Ealing Dean Allotment Society, said: “Over the last year more people have come to appreciate the importance of green space and the huge benefits to our health from gardening and spending time amongst nature. Our plotholders have felt very lucky to have been able to access the site during the pandemic.
"In 2019 around 700 people attended our last open day. Sadly the gates stayed closed during the pandemic. But we are once again open and looking forward to inviting local residents to enjoy the site with us. The plots will be looking at their best as we reach peak growing season, we hope people will join us for what promises to be a lovely afternoon.”
From 1pm to 5pm, the gates to Northfields Allotments will be open for the public to come and have a wander around, to see what
